What goes into Ollie Skincare

We make our skincare with goat milk, plant oils, butters, waxes and herbs, in small batches in Wisconsin. This guide explains what each ingredient does, which products it's in, and the few things (like preservatives and fragrance) we use and why. Every product page also lists its full ingredients.

The base: goat milk and traditional fats

Goat milk gives our soap its creamy, gentle lather. Its natural fats and lactic acid help cleanse without leaving skin feeling tight, which is why goat milk soap is popular for dry and sensitive skin. Kerrieanne started Ollie making soap from her own dairy goats' milk.

Found in: Goat Milk Soap, Clay Facial Soap, Charcoal Facial Soap, Turmeric Goat Milk Soap, Garden Soap, Tipsy Goat Soap.

Tallow is rendered beef fat, a traditional moisturizer with a rich, balm-like feel. We whip grass-fed tallow with jojoba and sunflower oils into a soft butter for face and body.

Found in: Whipped Tallow, and some soap bars such as Tipsy Goat.

Lard is a traditional soap-making fat that helps make a hard, long-lasting bar with a creamy lather.

Found in: Charcoal Facial Soap, Tipsy Goat Soap.

Plant oils

Light, easily absorbed and rich in linoleic and oleic acids and vitamin E. Ours comes from Century Sun Oil in Pulaski, Wisconsin. It's in most of our soaps, balms and body oils.

Technically a liquid wax, jojoba is similar to the oil our skin makes, so it feels light and absorbs well. A good fit for most skin types, including combination skin.

Found in: Facial Oil, Night Facial Oil, Bakuchiol Facial Oil, Cuticle Oil, Lip Serum.

A lightweight, nourishing seed oil often used for dry or uneven-looking skin.

Found in: Facial Oil, Lip Serum, Miracle Glow Balm.

A softening oil from Moroccan argan kernels, especially nice for lips, nails and cuticles.

Found in: Cuticle Oil, Lip Serum, Lip Balm.

A very light, stable oil that mimics part of skin's natural oil. Our Bakuchiol Facial Oil uses olive-derived squalane. It adds softness without a greasy feel.

Found in: Night Facial Oil, Bakuchiol Facial Oil.

In soap, coconut oil makes big bubbles and castor oil makes the lather creamy and stable. Castor oil also adds glide to balms.

Nourishing carrier oils we choose for their feel: richer oils like avocado for balms, lighter ones like apricot kernel and rice bran for facial, body, bath and shower oils.

Butters and waxes

Plant butters that make bars and balms feel rich and help skin hold on to moisture. Shea is in most of our soaps; cocoa and mango butter add a firmer, silky texture to balms and lotion bars.

Found in: Solid Lotion Bar, Whipped Sugar Scrub, Miracle Glow Balm, Lip Serum.

Beeswax helps lock moisture in and creates a light protective layer, so lotion bars and balms hold up against wind and cold. It's also what keeps them solid at room temperature.

Found in: Solid Lotion Bar, Calendula Herbal Salve, Lip Balm.

Plant-based waxes that firm up balms and give them a smooth glide.

A soft butter made by blending aloe vera into a plant oil. It gives our cleansing balm its silky, melting texture.

Found in: Cleansing Balm, Makeup Remover.

Botanicals and skin-loving extras

We grow herbs like calendula and lavender and slowly infuse them in oil to capture their properties. Calendula is a classic herb for soothing dry, chapped skin.

Found in: Calendula Herbal Salve.

A plant-derived ingredient often chosen as a gentler alternative to retinol for smoother, more even-looking skin.

Found in: Bakuchiol Facial Oil.

Bright, botanical oils used in small amounts in our balms and night oil for their nourishing, calming qualities.

Found in: Miracle Glow Balm, Under Eye Balm, Night Facial Oil.

Kaolin and rose clays, activated charcoal and colloidal oatmeal add a gentle, deep-clean feel to face bars and cleansing grains.

Found in: Clay Facial Soap, Charcoal Facial Soap, Cleansing Grains.

Hydrating and conditioning helpers. Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) and aloe vera juice are in our water-based serums; vitamin E (tocopherol) is in most of our oils and balms.

Sugar is the gentle exfoliant in our Whipped Sugar Scrub. Magnesium flakes dissolved in water make our Magnesium Oil.

Scent: essential oils and fragrance

Many products are scented with essential oils such as lavender, orange, lemongrass, peppermint, tea tree, rosemary and geranium. Essential oils smell lovely but can bother very sensitive skin, so check the ingredients and patch test.

A few products use fragrance oil for scents essential oils can't make, including our Rollerballs, Garden Soap and Tipsy Goat Soap. If you avoid fragrance, choose products that list only essential oils or no scent at all.

Safety, lye and preservatives

All real soap is made with lye. During saponification it reacts with the oils and turns them into soap, so no lye remains in the finished bar. That's why our soap ingredient lists say β€œsaponified oils.”

Products made with water, like our serums and magnesium oil, and rinse-off balms that water can get into, like our cleansing balm, need a preservative to stay free of mold and bacteria. We use small amounts of cosmetic preservatives such as Geogard ECT, phenoxyethanol, Liquid Germall Plus or Phenonip XB, as listed on each product. Bar soap, facial and body oils, and most balms and butters don't need them.

Ingredients like polysorbate 20 and 80, cetyl alcohol and Ritamulse SCG help oils mix with water so bath oils, shower oils and cleansing balms rinse off cleanly instead of leaving a slick.

Ingredient FAQ

Is there lye in your soap?

Lye (sodium hydroxide) is used to make all true soap, but it's completely used up when it reacts with the oils. No lye remains in the finished bar.

Do Ollie products contain preservatives?

Only some. Water-based products like our serums and magnesium oil, plus our rinse-off cleansing balm, contain a small amount of cosmetic preservative to keep them safe. Bar soap, facial and body oils, and most balms and butters don't need one.

Are your products fragrance-free?

Some are and some aren't. Many are scented with essential oils, and a few, like our Rollerballs, Garden Soap and Tipsy Goat Soap, use fragrance oil. Check the full ingredient list on each product page.

Are Ollie products vegan?

Not all of them. Our soaps contain goat milk, some products use beeswax, and Whipped Tallow and a few soaps contain animal fats. Many of our facial oils and serums are plant-based; check each ingredient list.

Where do your ingredients come from?

We buy locally where we can. Our sunflower oil comes from Century Sun Oil in Pulaski, Wisconsin, and we grow and infuse herbs like calendula and lavender ourselves. Everything is made by hand in small batches in Wisconsin.

Is goat milk soap good for sensitive skin?

Many people with dry or sensitive skin prefer it because the creamy lather cleanses without leaving skin tight. If you're very reactive, choose a lightly scented bar and patch test first.
